Accra, May 19, 2024 – Tragedy struck on Sunday, May 19, 2024, as a convoy carrying vehicles belonging to President Nana Akufo-Addo was involved in a fatal accident on the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway. The convoy was returning to Accra after accompanying the President to Kumasi for a series of events over the weekend.

According to an official statement from Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Office of the President, the unfortunate incident resulted in the death of one of the convoy’s drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta. Additionally, several security personnel suffered varying degrees of injuries and were initially treated at the Suhum Government Hospital. The injured individuals have since been evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation.

The accident also caused significant damage to several vehicles within the convoy, rendering them completely wrecked. Despite the severity of the incident, President Akufo-Addo was not harmed, as he had traveled separately to Accra via military aircraft.

In the statement, the Office of the President extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured officers. The statement also assured that further details will be provided as the situation continues to be assessed.

“We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time,” said Eugene Arhin, expressing the administration’s gratitude to the public.
